Best cocktail bars in Bali

Whether you’re coming to Bali for the culture, the beaches, the nightlife or the food, no visit to the island would be complete without a stop off at one of Bali’s incredible cocktail bars. Cocktails and tropical islands are a match made in heaven, with Bali finding its place on the world-stage as a top destination for mixologists and drink aficionados.

You can find cocktails at most bars and restaurants in Bali, but there’s a big difference between sipping a crafted top-shelf creation and drinking low grade alcohol mixed with soft drink. The prices can also vary dramatically, and you can expect to pay anything from a couple of dollars to prices on par with those you would pay in Europe or Australia.

While Bali’s beach bars still offer a great backdrop to sip a piña colada or brutally strong long island iced tea, it’s the rise of the hip bars and eateries around Seminyak, Canggu and Ubud that really get us excited about Bali’s cocktail scene. Here are some of our favourite cocktail bars that are serving up a hot blend of cool drinks and incredible style.

La Laguna

La Laguna offers a little piece of magic around every corner, with its eclectic bohemian décor making you feel like you’ve stumbled into your own personal fairy tale. As well known for its photographic opportunities as for its sunsets, La Laguna also knows a thing or two about cocktails. The La Laguna Signatures list is epic, including such sweet delights as the White River, with fresh banana, vodka, banana liqueur, Baileys and vanilla syrup. There’s also an extensive list of spirits and liqueurs, from the standard to the top-shelf.

Black Shores Bar & Supper Club

Since opening its doors in early 2017, Black Shores has fast become the hipster hangout in Canggu, with internationally renowned mixologists using the highest quality ingredients to create truly tailor-made cocktails. Every beverage on the menu goes above and beyond the norm to show off the bartender’s skills, like the signature Mrs Peppers, a blend of strawberries, lemon infused gin, black peppercorns, sugar and mint. Oh, and there’s an in-house barber for your hipster haircuts and beard trims, of course.

Hanks Pizza & Liquor

While the name sounds more like a dive bar you’d find in Texas than one of Seminyak’s trendiest bars, make no mistake, these guys blend up one hell of a drink! Hank’s is well known for its mouth-watering pizzas, pastas and even tastier range of cocktails, with drinks best enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the hectic Oberoi Street. Enjoy a classic barrel aged negroni or get into the tropical spirit with The Gingerberry, a gorgeous blend of white rum, berries, homemade ginger beer, lemon juice and basil.

Saigon Street

If Vietnamese food and cocktails are your idea of a good time, look no further than Seminyak’s uber-hip Saigon Street, which has one of the most unique cocktail lists you’ll find on the island. Will it be a Bang Bang Martini, which offers a mix of cool and hot with chilli infused vodka, cucumber vodka and muddled cucumber, or the Hanoi Hustler, with bourbon, vanilla liqueur, grilled pineapple and fresh local orange, served on the rocks? With so many to-die-for creations, you’ll have to come back to try them all.

Ku De Ta

Ku De Ta is an institution in Bali, and is one of the most popular places on the island to sink back some classy cocktails while enjoying the views over Seminyak beach. An upscale venue with a strict dress code, this is a premiere hotspot for people watching. The sophisticated food and drinks menu is akin to Western pricing, but offers an expansive selection of premium spirits, wines, champagne and cocktails. We love the Sugarcane Mojito – a Balinese twist on the classic with rum, mint, lime and fresh sugarcane soda, and the Rum Shake which combines coconut with caramel, coffee and pandan.

Copper Kitchen & Bar

Specialising in old world cocktails, the Copper Kitchen and Bar in Ubud is part of the boutique Bisma Eight Hotel, where sophistication and style goes into every last detail. Copper’s special barrel-aged program allows you to enjoy a negroni, old fashioned or Manhattan that’s been carefully aged for up to 45 days, while the Signatures menu serves up a dazzling mix of specialties with playful names like Pinky Malinky, Fancy Foreplay and Purpinkle. We’re dying to try the Date Bait, which offers an intriguing blend of bourbon, DOM Bénédictine, cabernet sauvignon and homemade sweet and spicy syrup.

Rock Bar at AYANA

If you’re looking for a cocktail bar with a view, you’ll be hard pressed to find a venue more impressive than this. The Rock Bar is part of the upmarket AYANA Resort and Spa, and is considered by sources like The New York Times to be one of the best bars in the entire world. Perched below rugged cliff faces overlooking Jimbaran Bay, this bar is serious about its cocktails, especially when it comes to gin and tonic. If you’re not sure where to start, try one of the mouth-watering creations from the Rock Stars menu, like the Rockito which combines Grand Marnier with vodka, mint, passionfruit syrup and fresh citrus juice for a true flavour sensation.
